It always surprises me when I run across a business that is either still not using social media or says that social media doesn’t work for them. Networking with potential clients through social media is one of the best ways to build your business. If you are having trouble being successful on social media, consider some of the reasons this may be happening.

Managing Expectations – what are your social media goals?

If I could only “go viral.” One of the common mistakes I see people making is that they think that social media is the magic bullet that will that will catapult their business into the big-time.

Though the power of the internet and social media is huge and things can go viral, it is actually pretty rare and those are typically one-time events. It’s great when it happens, but you have to sustain it. It’s like the one-hit wonder songs – they are on the charts for a little while, but where are they now? They didn’t follow up and keep it going by writing more great music. You have to constantly keep coming up with great content to keep “on top of the charts”

Not having a strategy

Doing things without a plan or randomly will not bring you closer to your goals. You need to know who your ideal client is and where they hang out. Without a conversion mechanism, you can bring in all the leads you want, but if you can’t close them, they are wasted.

If your message is not clear, it won’t attract the right people.

Not setting up a system

This is really where the rubber meets the road. Once you have a smooth, well-oiled machine in place, you just need to add fuel regularly to keep getting those leads pumping out.

It’s really all in the setup. I like to use the analogy of painting a room. What do you need to have in place before you paint a room? You need to tape the walls, put paper down on the floor, sand certain areas and remove switch plates for example. There are many details that you need to take care of before you actually start painting. Once you get the paint brush on the wall, it actually goes pretty quickly.

To be successful using social media for your business, you need to stick to a schedule of posting, post great content that people love to share multiple times per day and most importantly, engage with your followers.

Not checking analytics

How do you know whether something is working if you don’t check the score? Bringing in more leads and converting those to sales is only one way to keep score. By learning how to check your  analytics,  you  will be able to optimize your time spent online. When you know your numbers, you can replicate your successes and minimize the mistakes.
